Corsairs Three Third Period Goals Sink Vikings

SALEM, Mass. -- UMass Dartmouth scored three times in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and skate away with a 5-2 victory over Salem State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Thursday at Rockett Arena. The Corsairs improve to 5-10-2 on the season while the Vikings slip to 3-13 and 1-9 in conference.

A turnover led to the game's first goal as Justin Weinbrenner found Bryce Grennan alone in front of the crease for a 1-0 UMass Dartmouth lead at 12:43 of the first. The Corsairs reciprocated with their own turnover, which led to a Connor Woolley game-tying goal off a nice feed from Peyton Hughes at the 12:32 mark.

Salem State took the lead, 2-1 at 6:27 of the second when newcomer Dash Quartarolo's shot from the blue line found its way past goalie Daniel Davidson. However, UMass Dartmouth's Michael Mania knocked in a loose puck late in the period to send the game tied 2-2 into the third.

The Corsairs went back on top 3-2, when Michael Perrone converted on a power-play just 00:42 seconds into the period after UMass Dartmouth had gone 0-5 prior to that goal with a man-advantage. Later, Tyler Stewart added another score with a breakaway goal, to increase the margin to 4-2. Billy McDevitt capped the scoring with a late goal for UMass Dartmouth to make the final 5-2.

The Vikings held a sizeable 48-34 advantage in shots, but Davidson made 46 saves to secure the win. Aaron Mercer stopped 29 shots in net for Salem State.
