Salem State Picks Up First Win Of Season

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Salem State junior goalie Sean Cleary (Barnstable, Mass.) submitted a 26-save effort in between the posts for the visitors to back a three-goal middle period to sink UMass Dartmouth, 3-1, at Hetland Arena on Thursday evening. The Vikings grabbed their first MASCAC victory of the campaign while the Corsairs still seek their first triumph of the young season.

Just over eight minutes into the meeting, Corsair sophomore Dillon Radin (Long Beach, N.Y.) got the hosts on the board for the early advantage, redirecting the trickling puck that came into the zone from junior David Skarbek(Hyannis, Mass.). Salem State (1-2. 1-1) threw its counterpunch a period later; freshman Billy McGwin (Rochester, N.Y.) took a hard shot from along the boards that was initially turned away by Corsair sophomore net minder Parker Butler (Summit, N.J.), but forward Trevor Mallett (York, Me.) was there on the rebound attempt to collect his first collegiate marker.

The Vikings tacked on two more for a three-goal barrage in the stanza, seeing scores from freshmen Billy Falter (Wilmington, Mass.) and Bret Parker (Hanover, Mass.) to give the visitors a 3-1 lead heading into the final frame. Each forward joined their classmate Mallett in registering their first career scores.

The Blue and Gold outshot the opposition by a 27-20 clip. UMass Dartmouth (0-3, 0-2) was especially aggressive in the third period in its haste to stage a comeback, firing off 14 shots in the final 20 minutes alone. Salem State narrowly held the advantage on face-offs, taking 40 to the Corsairs' 38.
