Powers Earns Co-Medalist Honors at 2018 MASCAC Championship, Vikings Finish Runner-Up

SUTTON, Mass. - Salem State's Eric Powers finished as co-medalist at the 2018 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship at Blackstone National Golf Club on Tuesday. Powers shot a 77 to finish five-over par, tying Westfield State's Matteo Kodek. The Vikings finished runner-up to the Owls, who won the tie-breaker after each team finished with a score of 319.  
 
Worcester State finished third with a score of 334, followed by Western Connecticut State (363) and MCLA (393).  
 
Salem State's Reed Bourgeois and Westfield's Ryan Koczela finished one shot off the pace, shooting 78's.      
 
Salem State received an 80 from Justin Serowik and an 84 from Nick Sheehan to round out its scores, with Christian McKenna tallying a 93 on the afternoon. Rounding out the scores for the MASCAC champion Owls were Nick Eliopolous, who shot an 81, and J.J. Newcombe, who recorded an 83. An 89 from Garrett Desmond was enough to help the Owls win the tiebreaker over the Vikings.
 
Freshman Brodie Coughlin (North Brookfield, Mass.) was the leading Lancer on the afternoon, turning in an 82. Juniors Mike Manning (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Connor Anderson (Raynham, Mass.) each finished just a shot behind Coughlin, recording 83s on the day. Rounding out the scores for the Lancers were freshman Jake Poitras (Harwich, Mass.) with an 86 and senior Ryan Baker (Fresno, Calif.) who shot a 94.
 
Fourth place Western Connecticut was led by Giovanni Luongo on the afternoon, who recorded a score of 82. Mark Dinardo finished second for Western Connecticut with an 89, followed by Mike Madden and Cole Bonanno with 96s.
 
Reese Dwyer led the fifth place MCLA Trailblazers with an 88. Bob New (93), Hunter Woodbury (103), and Gabe Evans (109) rounded out the scoring for MCLA.
