SALEM, MASS. -- 75 former teammates, coaches, players and friends came together to celebrate the career of Salem State golf coach Steve Campbell '72 at the Beverly Golf & Tennis Club on Thursday, September 6.  

Hosted by former coach and Salem State Hall of Fame member George Jacobson, players and teammates reflected on coach Campbell's impact over the past 16 years in addition to his three years as a player.

Jacobson, who has been a mentor to Campbell and the golf program since arriving on the Salem State campus in 1966, led the Vikings to 21 straight NCAA Championships in his 22 seasons at the helm. He reflected on Campbell's tenure as head coach. "Steve has provided outstanding continuity of maintaining an excellent reputation for Salem State golf during his 16 years. His emphasis on requiring academic excellence in addition to being a fierce competitor on the golf course led to the successes of many of his former players. It is with great joy and humble thanks that he shared his talents with the "Salem State Golf Family." Now that he has turned the program to Kevin Daly '91, another former Salem State All-American, the program will be in excellent hands."

Campbell was a two-time captain for Salem State (1971-72) and coach Jacobson and competed in three NCAA Championships: 1970, 1971, 1972. He coached Salem State from 2002-2017, receiving the Gordon McCullough Award in 2013. As coach, Salem State appeared in two NCAA Tournaments and claimed seven Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference championships, including six individual titles, and one North Atlantic Conference Championship with one individual champion. A two-time NCAA Northeast District Coach of the Year, Campbell also coached seven All-Americans and five All-New England players.

Kevin Daly '91, a Salem State two-time All American played during Jacobson's final season in 1988 and went on to captain the '89-'90 and '90-'91 Vikings will assume head coaching duties this season with Campbell remaining as an assistant coach.
