Field Hockey Notches Win In Season Opener

WENHAM, MASS. –  Kelli McCarthy (Foxborough, Mass.) made 13 saves and Salem State received goals from Marissa Laganas (Beverly, Mass.) and Melanie Mason (Beverly, Mass.) as the Vikings earned a 2-1 victory over Gordon in their season opener on Friday afternoon.

The Fighting Scots (0-1) held an 8-3 advantage in shots, but it was Laganas, who found the back of the net first, putting the Vikings up 1-0 at the 16:40 mark.

Neither team scored again until Mason netted the first goal of her career in the 39^th minute as Salem State (1-0) held a 2-0 advantage. Cara Goudie (Wenham, Mass.) cut the deficit in half when she scored an unassisted goal in the 49^th minute.

McCarthy made the lead stand up however, as the sophomore stopped six-of-seven shots after halftime to propel Salem State to its first win.

Julia Altman (Hopkinton, Mass.) made two saves for Gordon, which outshot the Vikings 16-6 for the game.
