Field Hockey Notches Win In Season Opener

WENHAM, MASS. –  Kelli McCarthy (Foxborough, Mass.) made 13 saves and Salem State received goals from Marissa Laganas (Beverly, Mass.) and Melanie Mason (Beverly, Mass.) as the Vikings earned a 2-1 victory over Gordon in their season opener on Friday afternoon.

The Fighting Scots (0-1) held an 8-3 advantage in shots, but it was Laganas, who found the back of the net first, putting the Vikings up 1-0 at the 16:40 mark.

Neither team scored again until Mason netted the first goal of her career in the 39th minute as Salem State (1-0) held a 2-0 advantage. Cara Goudie (Wenham, Mass.) cut the deficit in half when she scored an unassisted goal in the 49th minute.

McCarthy made the lead stand up however, as the sophomore stopped six-of-seven shots after halftime to propel Salem State to its first win.

Julia Altman (Hopkinton, Mass.) made two saves for Gordon, which outshot the Vikings 16-6 for the game.
