Salem State Splits Pair With Farmingdale State

WINTER HAVEN Fla. -- Salem State played Farmingdale State in doubleheader action on Thursday. The Vikings took game one, 14-9 before losing the second game 6-5. Salem State is now 3-4 on the season.   

Game 1

Aidan Carabello earned the win in game one, pitching four innings of scoreless relief. He scattered three hits with a walk and strikeout. Owen Duggan and Lucas Rincon went deep for Salem State. Duggan finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI while Jake Boucher was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Aidan Lynch collected a pair of hits with two runs scored. Nolan Currier drove in four runs.

How It Happened

  • The two teams exchanged three runs apiece in the first with Duggan connecting for a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning.  
  • Farmingdale State added three more in the second on an RBI triple by Ryan Tam.
  • Rincon's home run in the third followed by a sacrifice fly by Currier cut the deficit to 6-5.
  • RBI singles by Tyler Diez and Tam in the fourth made it 8-5 before an RBI groundout by Aiden Mehmel tacked on another run.
  • The Vikings answered in the bottom of the inning as a fly ball off the bat of Currier brought home three runs after a misplay by the rightfielder. 
  • Salem State pulled ahead with a four-run fifth, on just one hit as two wild pitches and a two-run error accounted for the runs.
  • A groundout and RBI single up the middle by Boucher in the sixth made the final 14-9. 

Game 2

Nolan Currier was 2-for-3, including a three-run home run and two runs scored. Yabdriel Gonzalez had two hits in three at-bats with a run while Owen Duggan had a double and two RBI.Nick Krompegal started for the Vikings, going 3.2 innings, issuing five runs on five hits with four walks.  

How It Happened

  • The Rams jumped on top with a four-run first. A sacrifice fly and two-run single by Ryan Plocker made it 3-0 before a balk brought home the fourth run.
  • Trailing 5-0 in the third, Currier brought Salem State to within two runs with a three-run homer to left.
  • Duggan tied the game the game in the sixth with a two-run double to right-center.
  • However, Chris McGuggart led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run, giving Farmingdale State a 6-5 victory.
