Bobcats Shut Out Vikings 11-0

Northborough, Mass. -- Salem State opened their 2019 campaign with an 11-0 loss to Bates at New England Baseball Complex on Saturday. The Bobcats used a four-run, fourth inning and again scored four-runs in the sixth inning to open a 9-0 lead enroute to a shut out victory. Bates improves to 2-4 while the Vikings open at 0-1.

Brock Riley (Lowell, Mass.) took the start for Salem State on the mound. The senior allowed a single run in the first, but ran into trouble in the fourth, recording just one out as Bates sent 10 men to the plate in taking a 5-0 lead. Four straight hits by the Bobcats plated one run before Christian Beal made it 4-0 with another base hit. Luke Brennan replaced Riley, who managed six strikeouts in 3.1 innings, but was charged with five runs on nine hits. Brennan allowed an RBI single to Jack Arend before striking out the final two batters to end the inning.

The Vikings, who used six pitchers on the day ran into touble in the sixth as Beal launched a two-run home run for a 6-0 lead. Noah Loughlin later added an RBI double, making the score 9-0.  

Nolan Collins went six innings to earn the win, allowing just two hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts. The Vikings managed just four hits on the day.

Beal finished the day 3-4 with three RBI and a walk. Traverse Briana (Lynn, Mass.) had two hits in his first game for Salem State.
