Bio

Elected Captain of the basketball team in his senior year, Spanger scored more than 1,000 points during his four years of outstanding play as a guard. He was selected team MVP for the 1961-1962 season and won First Team All New England State College honors his senior year. Spanger was coached by fellow Hall of Famer James Twohig ’37. In addition to basketball, Spanger played two years of soccer while at Salem State College under the tutelage of coach Dick Schneider. He served as Treasure of the Men’s Athletic Association in his junior year and was elected President his senior year

 

After graduation, Spanger taught for several years at Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury, MA before returning to Salem State College as an administrator. For ten years he served in a number of positions at the College including Director of Admissions before being appointed to his present position as Director of Guidance at Newburyport High School in 1978. He has remained active in sports, playing semi-pro basketball and fast pitch softball for fifteen years. He also initiated the Salem State College Alumni basketball games. In addition he has coached basketball at summer camps and at the high school level. Spanger and his wife Nancy (Yuill), a 1965 SSC graduate, have three teenage children, Kristin Lee, Amy and Stephen.
