Salem State Athletics Honors 2018 Hall of Fame Class

Salem, Mass. – Salem State inducted six new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday evening. Former teammates, coaches, families and colleagues gathered at the George H. Ellison Campus Center to celebrate the achievements of the 2018 induction class. Former sports information director Tom Roundy for service to the athletic department, men's basketball player Brian Clark '13, women's basketball Lauren Dottin '98, women's soccer player Marcy Maglio Colinet '95, women's basketball and volleyball player Estrella Kuilan Mitchell '07 and men's golfer Thomas Tobey '89 were all honored with enshrinement into the University's Athletic Hall of Fame.   

Salem State University Director of Athletics Tracey Hathaway extended her congratulations to the class of 2018: "Each inductee this year represents Salem State University to its core.  Their accomplishments on the field, in the classroom, and in service have been transformative. They have contributed with integrity, sportsmanship, and most important, great character to the history of the University."     

   

 

The Salem State Athletic Hall of Fame honors and perpetuates the memory of athletes, friends and coaches, who performed and contributed at the highest level of intercollegiate athletic competition while at Salem State University. Selection is based primarily on athletic accomplishments, integrity, sportsmanship and character. Individuals other than athletes may be named to the Hall of Fame in recognition of their services and dedication to the Salem State University athletic program. 

 

 

Hired as Salem State's first full-time sports information director, Tom Roundy spent 27 years in the athletic department researching, writing and promoting the college's student-athletes. Roundy covered more than 1,500 Salem State athletic events in his two-plus decades of service, including 10 Final Fours. Roundy also served as media liaison and statistician for over 100 NCAA, ECAC, MASCAC and Invitational Tournaments hosted by Salem State. He was also appointed the first MASCAC publicity director in 1990, a position he held for seven years. As sports information director, Roundy was instrumental in the formation of the Athletic Hall of Fame at Salem State in 1986, serving on the Hall of Fame Selection Committee as a charter member for 23 years. In addition, Roundy also spent five seasons (1985-1990) as the assistant baseball coach at Salem State, during which time the Vikings averaged 25 wins per season, including an ECAC New England championship in 1987.     

 

A four-year starter, Brian Clark finished his career in fourth place on Salem State's all-time scoring list with 1,636 points. One of the most prolific scorers to ever play for the Vikings, the two-time MASCAC Player of the Year led Salem State to three conference regular season titles, one post-season championship (2012), two NCAA Tournaments and a "Sweet 16" appearance in 2009. Clark earned several accolades during his playing career, including: 2009 MASCAC Rookie of the Year, 2010-12 All-MASCAC First-Team, National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Northeast Region First-Team in 2012 and D3hoops.com first and second team recognition in 2011 and 2012. A two-time President's Cup winner at Salem State, Clark was also the MASCAC co-Scholar Athlete of the Year his senior year.

 

 

Lauren Dottin was defined by her versatility. Playing both guard and forward, she helped lead Salem State to four MASCAC Conference championships, and four NCAA Tournament bids, including the Final Four in 1995 during her career. A three-time All-MASCAC selection, and two-time, first-team honoree, Dottin starred on both ends of the floor, netting 1,058 career points while being the only player in Salem State history to rank in the top four in career rebounds, assists and steals. Dottin also set the school season record with 133 steals during her senior campaign, finishing second all-time in the category with 306. As a captain in 1995, Dottin spearheaded Salem State to a 28-4 record, the second most wins in program history as the Lady Vikings reached the national semifinals for the fifth time in program history. 

 

Marcy Maglio was a four-year starter at Salem State, leading the Vikings to four straight Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) championships during her time. A two-time All-American, she helped Salem State to three NCAA Tournament appearances and an ECAC bid in her final season. One of the top midfielders in New England, Maglio guided the women's soccer program to one of the most successful four-year periods in school history as the team posted a 51-16-9 (.671) record, including the most wins in a single season in 1990 as the Vikings went 16-2-1. The all-time assist leader in school history, she set the single season assist record with 18 in 1993.

 

 

The only three-time President's Cup winner in Salem State history, Estrella Kuilan Mitchell is one of Salem State's most decorated athletes, starring for the Vikings as a two-sport athlete in both women's basketball and volleyball. On the basketball court, Kuilan Mitchell was a four-time All-MASCAC selection, earning conference player of the year honors her junior and senior years while being named a Kodak District 1 All-American her final season. A two-time captain, Kuilan Mitchell led the Vikings to four MASCAC championships and four NCAA Tournament appearances. A two-time All-New England selection, she ended her playing career with 1,604 points, which currently stands fourth all-time at Salem State. One of the top centers in the region during her career, she is Salem State's all-time leading shot blocker, which includes a school record 14 in a single game. She also ranks first all-time in field goals, and fifth in career rebounds. Kuilan Mitchell also made an impact on the volleyball court, earning four first team all-conference selections while being named MASCAC Rookie of the Year (2002) and Player of the Year (2004).

  

Thomas Tobey was a four-year member of the men's golf program, earning All-American status in 1988 and 1989. A co-medalist at the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Championship in 1986 he was also a co-medalist at the ECAC Championships and the Toski Tournament in 1987, capping the year by winning the NCAA Division III Long Drive Championship. In 1988 he finished fifth at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships before winning the event a year later with a record low round of 139 (69-70).  A three-time All-New England selection, he helped Salem State to three Northeast qualifying round championships, including medalist honors in 1987. Tobey also appeared in four NCAA Tournament Championships, helping the Vikings to three-top 10 finishes, including a sixth place finish in 1986.
